Leakage Detection with 24/7 Monitoring and Automatic Water Shutoff

A ready-to-deploy solution for commercial buildings, facilities, and multi-site operators, built with Widgelix and the GreenMesh LoRaWAN Network Server, and delivered by a local integration partner.

Water leaks are one of the most expensive and frustrating facility issues because the biggest losses usually come not from the leak itself, but from delayed response.

In this implemented case, the client was dealing with recurring leak-related incidents that caused repeated repair expenses, service disruptions, and emergency maintenance work. A partner integrator deployed a multi-vendor leakage detection setup with sensors and shutoff controllers, connected through our LoRaWAN Network Server and managed in Widgelix.

The result is a 24/7 monitoring system that detects leaks instantly, alerts responsible teams in real time, and can automatically shut off water to minimize damage.

  • Deployment model: Pilot in 1 building, then scale
  • Coverage: Critical zones first (technical rooms, wet zones)
  • Response: Instant alerting + optional auto shutoff
  • Stack: Multi-vendor sensors + Widgelix + GreenMesh LNS

The Client Problem

The client operated a facility where water leaks were not constant, but frequent enough to create significant annual losses.

Typical issues included:

  • hidden leaks detected too late
  • damage to walls, floors, and finishing materials
  • emergency callouts outside working hours
  • repeated repair work and downtime in affected areas
  • manual reaction that depended on someone noticing the issue in time

Before the solution was installed, the client was spending an estimated €40,000 to €90,000 per year on leak-related repairs, restoration work, emergency labor, and operational disruption. In several incidents, the direct leak was small, but the total repair bill became much larger because water spread before anyone reacted.

This is exactly the type of problem where monitoring speed matters more than visual inspection.

What Was Implemented

A certified integration partner implemented a complete leakage detection and mitigation solution using:

  • multiple types of leak sensors from different manufacturers
  • controllers for automatic water shutoff to isolate the affected line quickly
  • LoRaWAN connectivity through the GreenMesh LoRaWAN Network Server
  • Widgelix for dashboards, alerts, rules, automation logic, and monitoring

This multi-vendor approach allowed the partner to select the right sensor type for each location instead of forcing a single-device design across all zones.

How the Solution Works

The system now runs as a continuous protection layer across the facility.

  1. Sensors monitor risk points 24/7
Leak sensors and non-contact detection devices are installed in critical zones such as technical rooms, utility areas, wet zones, and infrastructure points where leaks are most likely to occur or most expensive to ignore.
  2. Data is transmitted via LoRaWAN
All devices communicate through the GreenMesh LoRaWAN Network Server, which provides reliable device connectivity and data routing.
  3. Widgelix processes events in real time
Sensor data is visualized in Widgelix dashboards and evaluated by rules and alert logic configured for the client’s facility operations.
  4. Instant alerts are triggered
If a leak condition is detected, the system immediately sends alerts to the responsible team.
  5. Automatic water shutoff can be executed
Where configured, the system can automatically trigger shutoff controllers to close the water line and reduce potential damage before staff arrives on site.

This combination of monitoring and automated response turns leakage detection from a passive notification system into an active damage minimization workflow.

Why This Worked Well for the Client

Business Outcomes

  • 24/7 leakage monitoring across critical areas
  • much faster incident response, especially outside working hours
  • reduced damage exposure thanks to optional automatic shutoff
  • lower emergency repair costs and fewer large restoration events
  • better visibility into incidents, alerts, and response history
  • higher confidence in facility operations and preventive maintenance

The client is satisfied because the solution is flexible, practical, and easy to scale to additional zones and sites.

The solution delivered value because it combined three things that are usually fragmented:

  • reliable connectivity through our LNS
  • flexible multi-vendor device integration
  • practical automation logic in Widgelix

The client did not just receive sensor data. They received a complete operational process:

Detection → Alert → Automatic Response → Damage Reduction

This is why the system is useful in real facility operations and not only on paper.

Typical Environments for This Solution

This leakage detection solution is a strong fit for:

  • commercial buildings
  • office facilities
  • schools and campuses
  • hotels and hospitality
  • technical rooms and utility infrastructure
  • residential complexes
  • industrial support areas and non-production zones
